A popular UK land–based casino looks sets to close this August. The Portsmouth News site reports that the Grosvenor Casino in Southsea is set to close its doors for the last time this summer.
A closing date of the 9th of August has been mentioned for the Osborne Road casino on the south coast. About 50 employees who are currently working there will lose their jobs if this happens, although they are expected to be asked whether they want to apply for alternative jobs across the county in the same company.
The Grosvenor Casino is run by the Rank Group, who also operate another casino in the Gunwharf Quays part of the city as well.
An employee interviewed by the local newspaper said that they will be offered a week's wages for every full year of service, up to a maximum of 10 years. It isn't clear yet whether staff have been officially told about the closure or if it is still speculation at this point.
Local ward councillor Hugh Mason has been quoted as saying that he “regrets the closure” of any local business. Others have already started to wonder about the future of the building the casino is housed in and which has a long and interesting history. It was previously used for the likes of classy dinners, wedding receptions and even ballroom dancing events.
At the time of writing, no one from the Rank Group had made any public announcement about the future of the Grosvenor Casino.
