Massive Chinese Illegal Betting Operation Busted
A huge police operation in China has reportedly ended in the smashing of an illegal gambling operation and the confiscation of millions of Yuan as well.
The illicit gambling ring was based in the Guangdong region of the Asian county and was said to have said to have focussed on sports betting, with football betting a particular speciality of the group. As part of the massive police intervention over 150 people were arrested as well as the cash haul, with most of the arrests happening on the mainland, although the leader of group was collared in Macau.
132 Million Yuan Confiscated
Chinese investigators from Macau and Guangdong had spent a year looking into the betting operations. The money which was taken by the police force amounted to a staggered 132 million Yuan, which is over $21 million and more than £14 million. The money was grabbed from bank accounts held by members of the gang, with computer equipment and credit cards also said to have been confiscated in the recent raid.
The current best estimate is that the betting involved in this illegal operation could have been as high as 100 billion Yuan a year, with most of that being placed in different football games across the planet.
A spokesman for the Chinese law enforcement forces said that this gang was the biggest illegal gambling group which they have so far dismantled in the Chinese mainland. He went on to say that this bust has helped show the Guangdong region’s “great achievements” in the fight about illicit gambling on football games.
